It can be remembered that Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy during his election campaign made a promise in a letter that civil servants like postmen would regain their moral and material appreciation. In Hungary the number of affected small villages is 740: in the post offices there is a staff of 2-3 persons, usually from traditional postmen’s families whose employment will be in danger. According to plans buses on schedule would work as mobile post offices, transporting letters and parcels, even paying out pensions. Experts claim, however, that such a service could not fullfil the tasks of banking, insurance, and management of checks, and in this way would not meet the requirements of delivery norms in the European Union.
